As it because increasingly likely that Israel will head to the polls of the third time in one year some in the west bank and the Gaza strip hope for similar elections. The Palestinian Authority has officially requested Israel allow citizens in the west bank to vote in upcoming elections, one of the prerequisites President Abbas, who was elected in 2005, set out for the parliamentary elections. Hamas the violent terrorist organization that controls the Gaza strip in opposition to the Fatah faction of Abbas has jumped at the chance for elections, hoping to gain control of the Palestinian Authority, an event that could jeopardize the security of Israel. It remains to be seen whether Israel will allow west Jerusalem to vote however. In terms of what the U.S. stance on the matter should be is that is should seek to ensure the elections are free and fair as well as seek to help ensure that Hamas does not pose a danger to the region post election.

Israel needs to make a decision and stick to it. Either the Palestinians are part of Israel or they are not. If Israel decides that Palestinians are not citizens of Israel, then they should deport them from their country. This radical step will not be done or Israel would lose all support from the international community. Therefore, the Palestinians must concede to be recognized as Israeli citizens and Israel must accept them as such. Many cultures and peoples have been absorbed into the countries of today. Those from the Kingdom of Bavaria are Germans today and their culture lives on. Similarly, Italy was multiple kingdoms/countries not to mention old Empires that fractured and reformed. Once Israel accepts the Palestinians as fellow citizens, the country can be led where its inhabitants/citizens want it to go. Jim
Going to the polls for a third time in a year is quite alarming. Are we expecting a different outcome this time? This tells me that there are severe problems in Israeli society and Israeli politics that need to be fixed. Great post! Israeli related news is always interesting.
